ITALIAN AMBASSADOR IN MYANMAR MET SENIOR GENERAL MIN AUNG HLAING IN NAY PYI TAW

Yangon, 18 February 2016 - The Italian Ambassador in Myanmar, Pier Giorgio Aliberti, met yesterday in Nay Pyi Taw the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forced, Sen. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, with whom he agreed on the excellent status of the bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Senior General, assisted by the Deputy Commander in Chief, Deputy Senior General Soe Win, made reference to Italy in very positive terms. By recalling how the bilateral diplomatic relations, established in 1950, cooled down following the repression of the 1988 uprisings which led to the fall of Gen. Ne Win and to the takeover by the military junta, the Senior General pointed out the significant improvements in the bilateral relations between the two countries from 2011 onwards.

With regard to the current political context, Min Aung Hlaing reconfirmed the support of the armed

forces to any future government pursuing democratic reforms "in accordance with the laws already in force".

On this matter, Ambassador Aliberti underlined the importance of a deep commitment by the Armed Forces to the progressive democratic development of the country with the gradual transformation of the Tatmadaw into a modern and professional army.
