YANGON, December 2, 2015 – The Italian Ambassador in Yangon, Pier Giorgio Aliberti, met yesterday in Nay Pyi Taw the leader of the National League for Democracy, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, to discuss democratic transition in Myanmar and the outlook of Italian-Burmese bilateral relations. During the meeting the Nobel Peace Prize laureate confirmed her intention to appoint an inclusive government, whose actions will be inspired by a spirit of national reconciliation. Ambassador Aliberti recalled the main sectors of cooperation in which Italy is engaged in the framework of the EU joint programming, such as rural development, governance, and support to the private sector, with a particular focus on tourism and cultural heritage, while reiterating Italy’s readiness to define with the next government ways to implement the projects already underway. “The extraordinary success of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s Party at the elections of last 8th November generates a great potential for a transition towards real democracy in Myanmar”, Ambassador Aliberti said, “and Italy intends to reinforce her support to the historic process of progressive democratization currently ongoing”.
