ITALY CONFIRMS ITS FULL SUPPORT TO THE MYANMAR DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS.

YANGON, 19 FEBRUARY 2016 – The Italian Ambassador in Yangon Pier Giorgio Aliberti met in Nay Pyi Taw the recently elected Speakers of the two Chambers of the Union Parliament, U Win Myint (lower house) and U Mahn Win Khaing Than (upper house).

After agreeing on the positive evolution of bilateral relations between Italy and Myanmar since 2011, the Ambassador and the Speakers had a genuine exchange of views on the extremely important role of the Parliament, engine of recent reforms and key institution in the political life of the young Myanmar democracy. In this regard, a common wish for an intensification of inter-parliamentary relations and people-to-people exchanges was expressed in both meetings. “In this historic moment of transition to democracy” said Amb. Aliberti “extraordinary opportunities to further strengthening our bilateral relations are opening up”.
The growing commitment of Italy in the last five years through the Italian Cooperation’s activities in support of the democratic transition and socio-economic development of the Country was acknowledged with gratefulness.
