Italian Cuisine Week in Yangon: Conviviality and Solidarity

The programme of the Week of the Italian Cuisine in the World, organized by the Italian Embassy in Yangon, ended today with a charity dinner at the Residence of the Chargé d’Affari. The menu for the evening, entirely Italian, was prepared by a group of young apprentice cooks with disabilities or coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. The event was organized in collaboration with the Myanmar Deaf Chefs association, founded by the Italian Maurizio Mandl in 2016 to provide job opportunities for young deaf persons in the catering sector, and with the professional school created by the Shwe Sa Bwe restaurant in Yangon.

“Food means sharing, and sharing means solidarity,” explained the Italian Chargé d’Affaires in Yangon, Nicolò Tassoni Estense. “Precisely for this reason, considering the current situation in Myanmar, we have decided that all the initiatives we have organised during this week will support civil society organisations, especially those working on food security and education. We believe that the presence of the Embassy, in this moment of unprecedented need, can and should be a concrete way to bring help, hope and solidarity to the Burmese population, as well as to promote knowledge about our country”.

During this week, the Italian Embassy in Yangon organised an Italian Food Court, where restaurants, distributors and producers of Italian food and wine products in Myanmar offered over 500 visitors the opportunity to taste and buy a wide selection of specialties. Eleven restaurants and bars in Yangon are also offering a special menu dedicated to Italy. Thanks to the collaboration with the Embassy of Italy in Bangkok and the Italian Trade Agency office in Bangkok, a group of Myanmar chefs and experts have already had the opportunity to participate in the cooking and pastry courses offered by the ALMA cuisine school and other events organized in Bangkok.
